About Heritage Breeds

Heritage Breeds are animals that have been traditionally used on farms or are considered "land races" (animals living on the land) indiginious to a particular region or country. Many of these species of animals are becoming dangerously close to extinction and groups have come together to help preserve these animals. In the US, the American Livestock Breed Association has spearheaded many efforts to help many species of livestock. They have categorize the breeds of animals by existing populations to show how critical the situation is for that animal. For more information, please visit and consider supporting the ALBC, www.ALBC-USA.org

What we use at Catalpa Farm

We have chosen to raise many breeds of Heritage chickens here at Catalpa Farm. The meat birds, or broilers, we are raising this summers are called, "Delawares." They are not an old breed, just developed in the 1940's by George Ellis of Delaware, as an excellent meat producing bird. Unfortunately, they never really "took off" in popularity as the new, superfast growning birds were just entering the market in the 1950's. They are a beautiful, calm bird. Because the ALBC lists the Delaware's condition as "critical", we will also be selecting the best chickens from each run this summer to have as a core "breeding" flock and begin to develop a breeding stock of our own.
